Field competence

How a corrosion protection system is assessed.

Rev. 01

A corrosion protection system cannot be judged by its appearance alone.

Surface preparation, environmental conditions, products, film thickness, application intervals, adhesion and compliance with the specification are what determine the quality and service life of the whole coating system.

DO.G.MA. Service supports clients, shipyards, contractors and industrial operators with independent inspection, control, verification and technical documentation throughout every stage of the work.

The work is carried out where the work is: in the shipyard, in the workshop and on plant, in Italy and abroad.

Outcome

From the first check to final release.

Sec. 02

Services

Inspection, surveys, testing and qualification.

Inspection and survey work across the whole anticorrosion chain, from drafting the specification to final certification of the applied system.

  1. 01

    Inspection & quality control

Verification of workmanship against the specification.

QA/QC activity during preparation, application and completion of protective coating systems. Verification of workmanship, of operating procedures and of compliance with the applicable technical specifications and standards.

  2. 02

    Surveys & failure analysis

    Identifying the causes of deterioration.

Technical assessment of defects, deterioration, corrosion and anomalies in coating systems applied to steel structures, plant, ships and yachts. Analysis of the possible causes, collection of technical evidence and issue of specialist reports.

  3. 03

    Third party inspection

Independent assessment with both parties in attendance.

Third-party inspection and survey work for joint inspections, disputes, allocation of liability and assessment of whether the work was correctly executed. Data, measurements and technical documentation to support decisions based on verifiable evidence.

  4. 04

    Dry dock & tank coating

Supervision of hull and underwater surfaces.

Survey and technical supervision during dry-docking, refitting and the application of tank coating systems. Control of the work on the hull, underwater area, ballast tanks, potable water tanks, cargo tanks and other surfaces exposed to aggressive environments.

  5. 05

    Testing, acceptance & certification

    Instrument readings and acceptance criteria.

Testing and technical measurement to the applicable standards and specifications. Control of surface preparation, dry film thickness readings, pull-off testing, adhesion checks and final inspection.

  6. 06

    Specifications & qualification

    Specifications, procedures and operator qualification.

Drafting and review of coating specifications, operating procedures, QA/QC documentation and acceptance criteria. Qualification of procedures, operators, applicators and vendors for specific protective systems.

Technical control

The checks on the coating system, stage by stage.

Inspection is not about a single parameter but about the whole sequence of conditions that determines how long the coating system will last. Every stage produces data, evidence and verifiable documentation.

Ref. Stage Check
01 Surface preparation Assessment of the steel preparation grade and verification of the substrate condition.
02 Environmental conditions Monitoring of environmental conditions during application.
03 Coating thickness Measurement and certification of the applied dry film thickness.
04 Adhesion testing Pull-off testing and verification of the adhesion of the applied system.
05 Visual inspection Detection of defects, discontinuities and non-conformities.
06 Final release Closing verification, technical documentation and certification of compliance.

DGMS / 05 Capt. Marco Galano — Technical Director

Capt. Marco Galano is a Certified Surface Treatment Inspector and Technical Director of DO.G.MA. Service.

His career began at sea in the Marine sector and moved on to the inspection and quality control of protective coating systems, later extending to Oil & Gas, Power, piping, industrial plant, infrastructure and yachting.

Over the years he has worked on new building, refitting, dry dock, tank coating, pipe coating, thermal spray metallising, insulation, failure analysis, vendor qualification, testing and final release.

Assignments are handled by him personally. When several jobs overlap in the same period, the inspection is entrusted to an inspector holding equivalent certification.

AMPP and NACE identify the same certification: NACE International and SSPC merged in 2021 to form AMPP, and the certificate number stayed the same, with an N- prefix in the AMPP version. Both names are shown because both are still in use in the industry.

The certifications are issued personally to Capt. Marco Galano, Technical Director of DO.G.MA. Service. The FROSIO, AMPP, NACE and Collegio Ligure Periti ed Esperti marks belong to the respective bodies and are reproduced solely to identify the certifications held; this implies no affiliation, sponsorship or accreditation.
