In new building the critical item is the filling and fairing of the topside and of the whole area above the waterline: it is work entrusted to highly qualified operators and has to be checked with particular care, because on a mirror finish every defect stays visible. In refit the work concentrates instead on the renewal of hull bottom, topside and superstructures.

What clients ask before the job opens.

Method, applicable standards and how attendance is arranged across the different sectors.

  1. D.01

    Do you also work in sectors other than those listed?

    Yes. The criterion is not the sector but the presence of an anticorrosion treatment to be verified: from a ship to a bridge, through to any structure or component carrying a protective coating system.

  2. D.02

    Does the inspection method change between new building and refitting?

    The two are alike only in appearance. The instruments used may be the same, but the type of check and the minimum acceptance requirements are different.

    In both cases the reference remains the Client’s specification: that is what sets out what has to be verified and to which tolerance.

  3. D.03

    How are trips abroad handled?

    Travel follows the type of assignment agreed. Where the Client does not arrange it directly, the arrangements — travel, accommodation, site access — are made by the inspector, and the related costs are itemised on the invoice.

    There is no geographical limit: the projects covered have included Europe, the Middle East and Africa as well as Italy.

  4. D.04

    Which standard is applied if the Client does not name one?

    If the project specification does not call up a standard, the reference is the ISO and ASTM standards, which are those in current use in corrosion protection.

    In practice the specification almost always states which standard is to be applied: establishing which standard is applicable is the first check carried out, before setting foot on site.

  5. D.05

    Is there a minimum size of work for requesting an inspection?

    No. The item to be inspected can be a valve a few centimetres across or a large structure.

    What makes the check worthwhile is not the size but the value of the component and the risk attached to a non-compliant treatment.
