Frequently asked questions
Who carries out the inspection, with what, and how.
The checks a client makes before awarding an inspection assignment.
-
D.01
Who actually carries out the inspection on site?
The assignment is handled directly by Capt. Marco Galano.
When several jobs overlap in the same period, the inspection is entrusted to an inspector holding equivalent certification. The client always knows who is entering the site and with what qualification.
-
D.02
In which languages are the inspection reports written?
Reports are normally written in English, the language of international specifications.
On request the documentation is produced in Italian or in another agreed language.
-
D.03
What instruments are the measurements taken with, and how are they calibrated?
The instruments are his own: thickness gauges, surface profile gauge, thermo-hygrometer, adhesion tester for pull-off testing, gloss meter, soluble salt test kit.
A calibration check is carried out daily before use on site. Calibration itself falls due every two years and is entrusted to a third-party certification body, which issues the calibration certificate: it is supplied on request together with the inspection documentation.
-
D.04
Which safety and fitness certificates are currently valid for site access?
Besides PPE, site access calls for the qualifications the work requires: confined space entry, use of mobile elevating work platforms, working at height with an approved harness.
For offshore work and terminals there are also BOSIET — OPITO, STCW’95 and the LNG terminal safety course. All qualifications are kept current: the full list is on the certifications page.
-
D.05
Is a continuing assignment as owner-side inspector possible?
Yes. On new buildings, long continuing assignments have been covered, up to eighteen months per vessel and across several vessels in succession.
An assignment of this kind has to be planned well ahead, because it commits the inspector for the whole build.
